The Heart Behind the Mission: Our Founder, Hillary Wilson
"Life doesn't get easier or more forgiving; we get stronger and more resilient."
— Steve Maraboli
Hillary’s Story
Women Mentoring for Life was born from the lived experience and professional dedication of our founder, Hillary Wilson. Hillary’s journey is a testament to the idea that our greatest challenges can become the foundation for our greatest contributions.
A Foundation of Resilience
Though Hillary was adopted as an infant, her early life was far from easy. She grew up navigating the shadows of an alcoholic family, domestic violence, and abuse. Learning to manage these traumas alone at a young age gave her a deep, personal compassion for women who face life’s obstacles without a safety net.
However, Hillary had one vital advantage: the mentorship of her grandparents. They didn't "do" the work for her; instead, they provided the guidance and encouragement she needed to take ownership of her future. Their belief in her allowed her to navigate college independently and eventually pursue her calling in the helping professions.
From Psychotherapist to Personal Purpose
Hillary’s career in Psychotherapy gave her a front-row seat to the systemic cycles that hold families back. During her college years and throughout her professional path, she worked with foster youth and children in schools for the severely emotionally disturbed. She saw children whose lives were impacted by parents who struggled with their own trauma and addiction, driving a deep passion in her to do more for this population.
Later, as a Marriage and Family Therapist, she worked with teens on probation and single mothers who were in crisis. She realized that a lack of resources and knowledge is what truly restricts a woman’s opportunity to thrive.
Resilience Through Life-Altering Loss
Hillary’s own resolve was tested by a series of devastating losses: the death of her mother, the tragic loss of her nephew to addiction, and her older sister’s struggle with mental health and instability. In the midst of this heartache, she faced family betrayal and losses. It was through the pain, hurt, and loneliness of these events that Hillary found her true calling.
A Vision for Every Woman
Hillary founded Women Mentoring for Life because she knows what it is like to feel alone when you are dealing with so many problems. She understands that without financial literacy, budgeting skills, and emotional support, women are susceptible to being taken advantage of by others.
She built this organization to be the stability for others that her grandparents once were for her. Her philosophy for the organization is best captured by the words of poet Terri St. Cloud:
"She could never go back and make some of the details pretty; all she could do was move forward and make the whole beautiful."
Today, Hillary Wilson leads Women Mentoring for Life with a blend of clinical expertise and deep, lived empathy. She is dedicated to ensuring that no woman has to walk the path to strength alone, helping them move forward to make their own lives beautiful.
